Centre-left primary candidate trails Bersani ahead of run-off

Party led by Renzi would poll 4.7% in general elections

Rome, November 30 - A party led by Matteo Renzi, one of the contenders in a second-round ballot in the primary to choose a centre-left candidate for the premiership, would poll 4.7% in spring general elections, pollster SWG said on Friday. The Florence mayor, 37, is due to face off against Democratic Party (PD) Secretary Pier Luigi Bersani, a veteran politician, on Sunday after neither candidate managed to win a majority in the first round on November 25. On Friday SWG said Renzi was set to poll 43%-47% and Bersani 53-57% in the run-off, although the outcome would depend to a large extent on the number of new voters registered. Just over 3.1 million people turned out for the first round and SWG said 100,000-200,000 new voters could make all the difference.
