Vatican: Pope to start tweeting before Christmas

Vatican City, November 29 - Pope Benedict XVI is due to make his personal debut on Twitter shortly, Vatican sources said Thursday. The inititaive "could be launched before Christmas," Monsignor Claudio Maria Celli, President of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, told the Vatican daily Osservatore Romano. Early tweets are expected to contain reflections from the Sunday Angelus and it will be the pontiff himself who indicates which content is to be summarised in messages of up to 140 characters. Father Antonio Spadaro, editor of the Jesuit journal La Civilta' Cattolica, rejected the possible danger of reducing faith to a matter of slogans. "It is possible to express deep thoughts without failing to cultivate one's own inner character," he told Vatican Radio.
