Rome, November 28 - Italian multinationals were showing signs of healthy growth outside the country in 2010, adding staff and increasing sales, national statistics agency Istat reported Wednesday. Italian-based firms reported a staff increase of 6.4% in 2010 compared with the previous year and by 13% over 2007 staffing levels. That meant that more than 22,000 Italian firms employed 1.6 million workers in 164 countries in 2010, according to Istat. The number of subsidiaries owned by Italian multinationals grew by 3.8% in 2010 while earnings jumped by 15%, or by 57 billion euros, to reach a total of 435 billion euros earned internationally. Italian companies turned mostly to Romania for foreign workers, hiring 88,000, followed by Brazil, with 81,000, and China, with 78,000. In 2010, the highest number of international Italian firms were operating in the sectors of mining, auto manufacturing, electrical generation, natural-gas production and insurance.
