Colosseum to be surrounded by security zone

Colosseum to be surrounded by security zone

Rome, November 27 - Lazio Regional Director for Cultural Heritage Federica Galloni said on Tuesday that an impassible security zone will be erected around Rome's iconic Colosseum to protect both the monument and passers-by. Last September, pieces fell off the monument due to weather extremes and the need for more regular maintenance. An 11-square-meter area around the Colosseum was cordoned off after chunks of plaster fell from the highest arcade. Plans for a major restoration of the Colosseum have overcome legal challenges and the work to be funded by shoe magnate Diego Della Valle will start in 2013. The security zone will be "mathematically" calculated at varying distances from the structure and composed of iron and cement pillars.
