Prosecutor alleges million-euro fraud of artists' work

Rome, November 26 - Prosecutors say as many as 205 people could be prosecuted on charges including fraud, money laundering and forgery in connection with copyright abuses against Italian performing artists. The charges stem from protection of artists' works through the Institute for the Mutual Protection of Performing Artists and Performers (IMAIE). The institute was established in 1977 to protect the work of performing artists and musicians from illegal copying, and ensure compensation when their work is re-used. Prosecutor Luca Tescaroli suggested that most of the defendants in the case were falsely listed as artists between 2007 and 2008. They could be charged with money laundering related to 840,000 euros in banking transactions.
