Israel dubs late Florence cardinal 'Righteous among Nations'

Jerusalem, November 26 - Cardinal Elia Angelo Dalla Costa, the archbishop of Florence during World War II, was declared "Righteous among the Nations" by the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem on Monday for his role in saving hundreds of Jews. Righteous among the Nations is an honor in Israel given to non-Jews who risked their lives during the Holocaust to help Jews escape Nazi persecution. The archbishop was known as "the Cardinal of Charity" for helping save the lives of thousands of Italians, in addition to Jews, under the Fascist regime. In 1981, 20 years after his death, the Vatican began the process of beatification.
