Napolitano denounces 'intolerable' homophobic attacks

Rome, November 23 - President of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano on Friday reiterated his concern over the "persistence of intolerable homophobic attitudes that damage individual rights and dignity" and reaffirmed the centrality of the principle of equality to the Italian Constitution. "At this time of economic crisis that has a strong impact on our society it is all the more necessary to remain vigilant to prevent the exacerbation of discrimination and social exclusion fuelled by prejudice and intolerance," he said in a message to the congress of the Italian LGBT rights group Arcigay, calling for the battle against homophobia to carried out not just by a "praiseworthy vanguard" but on the level of a broader civil commitment. His comments came as the friends and relatives of a young student who took his life on Tuesday night after being derided for being gay gathered in Rome to pay their final respects. The 15-year-old, nicknamed 'the boy with the pink trousers', had been the object of taunts and insults on Facebook.
