Gamblers seek assistance, addiction up 691%

Rome, November 23 - Public support services for drug abusers and other addicts saw a 23% rise in users between 2005 and 2010, with a 691% increase in the number of users with gambling addictions, according to a study by the public administration arm of the main left-wing trade union confederation CGIL, presented on Friday. Service operators also registered a 57% increase in users over the same period as a result of cocaine addiction, of 60% as a result of alcoholism and of 62% due to the abuse of 'other substances', the research found. The increase in workload concerned both treatment and prevention services. Over 900 operators working in 159 service centres across 16 regions were interviewed by questionnaire for the study.
