Alarm in Milan after two murders

Milan, November 22 - There was alarm in Milan on Thursday after a woman was found strangled in an apartment and a man was shot dead in a street. Police found the unidentified woman, aged around 30, late Wednesday evening while searching the home of a 56-year-old man arrested after attempting to rob a supermarket in the Isola neighbourhood of northern Milan. She had been trussed up by the hands and feet with her head inside a plastic bag. Initial checks suggest that she was a homeless drug addict. She is thought to have frequented the suspected robber, also a drug addict with previous criminal convictions for drug abuse and robbery, for several days. Earlier on Wednesday 69-year-old Diego Preda, an insurance broker, died on the spot after being shot in the head in Via Alberto Mario while going to get his car. A witness who heard the shot said he then saw a man running in the direction of Piazza Zavattari. The motive for the killing remains unclear.
