Man threatens to jump from Ponte Vecchio bridge in Florence

Florence, November 21 - A man threatened to throw himself off the historic Ponte Vecchio bridge in Florence Tuesday after losing his job. Police saved the 40-year-old Milanese man as he dangled on the railing over the Arno river and spoke to emergency operators on the telephone. The operator was credited with stalling the distressed man, listening to his plight long enough for rescuers to make their way through the crowded tourist area. According to police, the would-be jumper said he was a father of two small children and had lost his job at a restaurant two years ago.
