Consumer group asks for damages from February snowfall blackout

Electric giant ENEL faces class action suit

Rome, November 21 - Italian consumer group Codici announced on Wednesday the first class action suit against the largest electricity operator in Italy ENEL for the "innumerable hardships and inefficiencies" resulting from heavy snowfall throughout the country last February. "It is the first time in Italy that consumers have banded together to demand damages against the country's largest distributor of energy," Codici President Ivano Giacomelli said. Over 300 citizens originally signed up to take part, but at this stage 130 have been selected as plaintiffs. The consumer group is asking for 300 euros in damages per day per complainant in addition to reimbursements based on invoices and receipts for fuel and physical harm due to lack of electricity. The initial suit covers inhabitants of the Frosinone area 80 kilometers south of the capital city Rome, much of which was left without power for up to 10 days. For initial proceedings, ENEL could be asked to pay approximately 30 million euros in compensation.
