EU releases Emilia quake aid

Brussels, November 20 - The European Union on Tuesday gave the green light to 670 million euros in aid for Italy's Emilia Romagna region, hit by two devastating earthquakes earlier this year. The aid package, which had been controversially held up for two days by five countries earlier this month, will get a final OK from the European Parliament Wednesday, EU sources said. Germany, Netherlands, Finland, Sweden and Britain blocked the reconstruction aid earmarked by the EU's solidarity fund on November 9 and 10. The May 20 and May 29 quakes, which hit Emilia more than Romagna, killed 27 people, destroyed and damaged many historic buildings and artworks and left the region's economy on its knees.
