Fifth of Italian households' spending-income inconsistent

Rome, November 20 - Italy's tax agency said Tuesday that it had calculated that 4.3 million households, roughly 20% of the total, spend in a way that is inconsistent with their reported incomes. Italy's tax authorities stressed, however, that these cases of inconsistency do not "automatically represent an evasion". Attilio Befera, the head of the Italian tax agency, Agenzia delle Entrate, said "around one million" of those households declared incomes of "close to zero" yet still made major outlays. The Italian authorities have launched a major clampdown on rampant tax evasion in recent years.
