Probe after canisters fall on protesters

Ministry tear gas fired by police says Rome police chief

Rome, November 16 - Rome's chief of police said Friday the tear gas canisters apparently fired from the justice ministry building during recent anti-austerity protests were released by police. ''The tear gas from the ministry was fired by police agents: the canisters were fired in a parabola not in the direction of the demonstrators. The trajectory was redirected because the canisters hit the building,'' said Fulvio Della Rocca. Earlier in the day Justice Minister Paola Severino ordered an internal investigation into the incident following calls for clarification over an amateur video obtained by La Repubblica newspaper apparently showing three tear gas canisters being fired in quick succession from the second floor of the ministry in Via Arenula on passing protesters. The results of the probe are pending.
