Statistics agency says Italian birth rate on a downward trend

Average age in Italy rising as fewer births reported

Rome, November 14 - The Italian population continues to age, as fewer births are occurring, the national statistics agency said Wednesday. According to Istat, a total of 546,607 births were reported in Italy in 2011, about 15,000 fewer than were recorded the previous year. This figure confirms the downward trend that began in 2009, the agency added. A falling birthrate is especially obvious in couples where both partners are Italian - a drop of almost 40,000 births in such couples, compared with 2008 figures, says the agency. Where one parent is foreign, the birthrate is also declining but at a much slower rate, the agency said.
