Appointment by culture minister seen as 'controversial'

Melandri resigns from parliament to head Rome's MAXXI museum

Rome, November 13 - The Italian MP Giovanna Melandri recently tapped as president of the MAXXI Foundation, the non-profit organization that owns and runs the Rome MAXXI Museum resigned from parliament on Tuesday. "I leave Parliament with great emotion," Melandri said during her last House meeting. "I only hope that the controversy around my choice to resign and drive this extraordinary museum will at least serve as publicity. You are all invited to visit". Melandri's appointment by Culture Minister Lorenzo Ornaghi reportedly stirred accusations of political horse-trading in October, and prompted a meeting between Premier Mario Monti with Ornaghi to discuss it. Melandri is a politician from the center left who served as culture minister under ex-premier Romano Prodi and has written a book on the importance of culture and landscape for national tourism policy.
