Fourth Messina ferry worker fighting for life

Messina, November 30 - A worker was fighting for his life on Wednesday after taking ill while working on fuel tanks on a Caronte & Tourist ferry anchored in Messina port in a workplace accident that saw three fellow workers die. Ferdinando Puccio, 36, was initially mistakenly reported to have died after inhaling toxic fumes while performing a welding job on the Sansovino ferry on Tuesday. The other confirmed victims are Gaetano D'Ambra, 27, Christian Micalizzi, 38, and Santo Parisi, 51. The ship's captain Salvatore Virzì is also reported to be in a serious condition. Sicily regional governor Rosario Crocetta was due in Messina on Wednesday afternoon to pay homage to the victims, "express the suffering and pain of all Sicilians and reaffirm that we must live and not die by work". Meanwhile, prosecutors in the port city have opened an investigation into manslaughter and injury in connection with the incident.
