Govt committed to asbestos safety says Renzi

Rome, November 29 - The government has shown "the greatest" commitment to environmental policies and occupational safety, Premier Matteo Renzi said in a message to the second national assembly on asbestos on Tuesday. The event, promoted by the parliamentary commission of enquiry into workplace accidents, also saw the presentation of a new draft bill harmonising existing asbestos regulations and ensuring justice for victims and their families. "We need to join forces, to set aside the indecision and contradictions that have characterised the State's approach to the issue of asbestos," Senate Speaker Pietro Grasso said. At the first national assembly on asbestos at the Senate in November 2015 Grasso said completing a clean-up of asbestos around Italy was "a true emergency" as asbestos-related illness continues, by some estimates at a pace of about 50 new cases per year.
