Rome, November 28 - President Sergio Mattarella said Monday he was the arbiter of political life. He said his task was "a little like" that of a referee, and he carried it out "with two activities: exhortation and suggestions, that is via persuasion". He said it was his job to make sure that Italy ran smoothly "as a system". Mattarella is set to play a key role, pundits say, if Premier Matteo Renzi loses a December 4 Constitutional reform referendum.
