Verdict to be determined after last testimony by Mahroug

Ruby trial could end by last week in January

Milan, November 12 - The final verdict in the trial of Silvio Berlusconi for alleged sex with an underage prostitute and alleged abuse of power is expected to be announced by the last week of January 2013, following the final testimony by Karima 'Ruby' El Mahroug, the Moroccan runaway and nightclub dancer at the center of the case. Prosecutors claim that the ex-premier allegedly sought to persuade police to release Ruby after she was detained for an unrelated theft claim to hush up their relationship. Berlusconi has said he was trying to avoid a diplomatic incident as he believed Mahroug was a relative of former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak. Both Berlusconi and Mahroug deny having had sex. The charge of having sex with an underage prostitute carries a jail term of up to three years, and abuse of office 12 years.
