Police arrest 12 women as part of anti-mafia sting operation

Rome, November 7 - A group of 12 women were among the 48 arrests carried out Wednesday by police near Naples in an operation against the local Camorra mafia. The women from the town of Torre del Greco on the foothills of Mount Vesuvius had taken over the duties of their jailed husbands, fathers and brothers in managing the drugs trade and other illegal activities like extortion. Investigators found that while the women began by simply communicating orders received from their jailed kin to associates, with the passing of time they became increasingly entrepreneurial and took over management of their crime families' finances, including paying their pushers' and their family lawyers' 'salaries'. Police investigators deciphered the criminal activities through thousands of wire taps as well as with the help of local informants. Police also seized assets worth up to 30 million euros as part of the operation.
