(ANSA) – Rome, November 7 – A local councillor from a town north of Naples was recovering Wednesday in hospital after two masked men beat him with a stick on Tuesday afternoon. Carmine Ciro Marano, a councillor in the town of Melito and member of Italy's centre-left Democratic Party (PD), was with a friend on Tuesday afternoon when he was attacked. The Carabinieri police are investigating. Melito's mayor, Venanzio Carpentieri, who went to visit Marano in hospital Wednesday, said that the victim of the attack was recovering. "Today he is certainly better even though he has to remain under observation in hospital," Carpentieri told reporters. "Luckily exams conducted exclude any sort of brain damage and possible consequences to his sight," Carpentieri said. Marano's face was covered with bruises and he had fractures near his eyes.
