Soccer: Italy up from 8th to 5th in FIFA rankings

Rome, November 7 - Italy rose from eighth to fifth in the latest FIFA rankings, topped by Spain ahead of Germany, world soccer's governing body said Wednesday. Cesare Prandelli's men were boosted by two 3-1 World Cup qualifying wins against Denmark at home and in Armenia. Argentina climbed to third thanks to Brazil 2014 qualifier wins against Chile and Uruguay, ousting Portugal which lost to Russia. Fabio Capello's Russians gained three places to ninth. England and Netherlands fell one spot while Colombia, Croatia and Brazil rose one, with the Brazilians now 13th. Uruguay dropped four to 11th and France five to 18th, after a home friendly loss to Japan and despite a home draw against world champions Spain. Ecuador rose three and Mexico and Algeria five. The North Africans claimed 19th place ahead of Belgium which gained 10 positions. Here are FIFA's November rankings: 1. Spain 2. Germany 3. Argentina (+1) 4. Portugal (-1) 5. Italy (+3) 6.
