Italian academy of language establishes Facebook page

Florence, November 5 - For more than 400 years, Florence's Accademia della Crusca has studied and promoted the Italian language. And now, it's getting into social networking. Through its own 2.0 project, the academy is boosting its Internet presence by hosting a Facebook page, establishing a Twitter account, and activating a channel on YouTube in order to transmit video lectures, discussions, and other forms of research on linguistic issues. "Social networking platforms are bringing changes to language, just as radio and TV did," said Academy President Nicoletta Maraschio. "This should be seen and studied". Maraschio said the academy is also studying how the Italian language, especially vocabulary, evolved through the 19th and 20th centuries. This year, the academy marks the 400th anniversary of the publication of its first dictionary, produced in 1612. On Thursday, a delegation from the academy will travel to Rome to meet the President of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano to mark the occasion.
