Gang investigated for alleged robbery of Evita jewels raided

Trento, October 30 - Finance police in the northern region of Trento confiscated property worth 1.5 million euros on Tuesday from a criminal gang under investigation for the alleged 2009 robbery of jewelry belonging to the former first lady of Argentina, Eva Peron. Part of the stolen jewels were recovered in a luxury Milan hotel in 2011, though the thieves were not present during the operation and thus escaped arrest, police said. Ten million euros' worth of the valuable items have never been recovered. Police said that they raided the so-called Band of Sheiks' luxury villa near the northern city of Milan as part of broader investigations into their alleged criminal activities, including trafficking, fraud and the 2009 hit-and-run homicide of a Milan policeman.
