Milan, October 30 - Tax evasion in Italy has reached "unacceptable" levels not just ethically, but also in terms of public finance and must be fought, Economy Minister Vittorio Grilli said Tuesday at a Euromoney conference for investors and borrowers in Milan. "We anticipate lowering the tax rate, but a higher tax base is needed and for this reason we need to combat evasion with every available instrument," he said. Grilli confirmed the need to push on with reforms and the work of stabilising public spending, "taking care not to digress from the established path". "We are deeply transforming our economy," said the minister. "If the winds that are against us die down and if we are helped by a stern wind from the international economy we are convinced that the changes in our growth potential will translate into a much better performance by our economy," he concluded.
