NICOSIA, 29 OTT - Police have arrested three people on suspicion of planning to kill the Attorney General, Petros Clerides and the assistant director of Prisons, as Famagusta Gazette online reports. A police spokesman refused to confirm reports that an anti-tank weapon and other weapons were found in the possession of the three suspects. He said that during a police search several exhibits were seized and were under forensic examination. Reports said an attack against the Attorney General and also against the Assistant Director of the Central Prisons, was averted almost at the last minute. One of the arrested men is an ex-army non-commissioned officer with a police record and a second one is a convict serving a long prison sentence for booby-trapping a car with a bomb, which went off and injured a judge and his juvenile daughter 16-years ago. The men have been remanded in custody on suspicion of conspiring to commit murder and of arms possession. The police refused to speculate as to the motives of the suspects, saying that investigations are still at an early stage. (ANSAmed).
