Pessimism in Italian households highest since 1996

Rome, October 24 - Pessimism among households in recession-hit Italy about their economic plight is at its highest level since 1996, Istat said on Wednesday. The national statistics agency said its so-called 'personal climate index', which measures families' assessments and expectations regarding their savings and their economic-financial situations, dropped to 91 in October from 92.3 last month. It said this was the worst figure since it started compiling the index 16 years ago. However, Istat's consumer confidence index, which is slightly different as it measures people's evaluations of the general economic climate rather than their own personal situations, improved slightly in October, climbing to 86.4 from 86.2.
