Former Mister Universe absolved of girlfriend's doping death

Appeals court overturns six-year sentence for Federico Focherini

Former Mister Universe absolved of girlfriend's doping death

Modena, October 23 - A former 'Mister Universe' was absolved of his conviction and six-year prison sentence in the doping death of his bodybuilding girlfriend on Tuesday. The Appeals Court found that "the crime does not exist" in the case of 44-year-old Federico Focherini, winner of the Mister Universe title in 1996. Focherini had been found guilty of illegally administering dangerous drugs to his girlfriend, 34-year-old Claudia Bianchi, just before a bodybuilding competition in Rome on March 4, 2004. The Appeals Court allowed that Focherini's case had taken its course to trial largely due to it's notoriety in Modena, where the bodybuilder's gym is located. The crimes of which Focherini was accused had passed the statute of limitations, but wanting to clear his name, Focherini chose to go to trial anyway under an accelerated judicial process. "In one minute, eight years of suffering have been cancelled," said Focherini after his absolution was read in court. photo: Claudia Bianchi
