Culture minister stands by controversial MAXXI appointment

Rome, October 23 - The Italian culture minister took personal responsibility Tuesday for the controversial appointment of an outgoing member of parliament to head Rome's prestigious contemporary art museum, the MAXXI. "I took the decision autonomously, thinking of the good of the MAXXI. The future will judge. I assume full responsibility," Minister Lorenzo Ornaghi told journalists in Rome, while confirming the appointment of Giovanna Melandri as president of the MAXXI Foundation, the non-profit organization that owns and runs the MAXXI Museum. "Now Melandri will illustrate the project (for the museum's future)," Ornaghi added. The appointment reportedly stirred accusations of political horse-trading in recent days, and prompted a meeting between Premier Mario Monti with Ornaghi to discuss it, reported the newspaper Il Messaggero on Tuesday. Melandri is a politician from the center left who served as culture minister under ex-premier Romano Prodi and has written a book on the importance of culture and landscape for national tourism policy.
