Families with children risk benefits, says Istat

Rome, October 23 - The national statistics agency Istat said on Tuesday that budget measures contained in the government's so-called Stability Law would impact households with children. Istat President Enrico Giovannini said at a hearing in the House Tuesday that "families with children, especially minors, would receive lower benefits than the average" in their income bracket. Italian Premier Mario Monti is in meetings Tuesday to discuss the budget. "The Stability Law is not unchangeable and it's the politicians' job to put it into motion in agreement with the work of the (government) experts," said UDC chief Pier Ferdinando Casini, whose support of Monti's administration has been almost unconditional, after meeting the premier Monday. The package features reductions in income tax in the two lowest bands and a series of cuts that will hit sectors including health and eduction. photo: Istat President Enrico Giovannini
