Dignitaries to mark 70th anniversary of El Alamein

Cairo, October 19 - Italian and international dignitaries will gather on Saturday in the northern Egyptian town of El Alamein to mark the 70th anniversary of the historic battle that marked a major turning point in the North African Campaign of the Second World War. This year the international ceremony is being organised by Britain. Italy will be represented by House speaker Gianfranco Fini, army chief Biagio Abrate and numerous members of parliament. Commonwealth nations, Austria, France, Germany and Greece will also be present with delegations. The ceremony will also be attended by veterans of the 13-day battle that pitted Allied soldiers under the command of British Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery against Italian and German troops led by Erwin Rommel from October 23-November 4, 1942. The Allies' victory turned the tide in the North African Campaign, ending Axis hopes of occupying Egypt and capturing the Suez Canal. There will also be a separate ceremony at the Italian war cemetery.
