'Willing to find alternative,' says Alemanno

Rome mayor rules out ski event at Circus Maximus

(ANSA) - Rome, October 18 - Rome Mayor Gianni Alemanno on Thursday ruled out hosting an event on Alpine skiing's World Cup circuit at the famed Ancient Roman Circus Maximus site. "The idea of hosting the competition in one of the most precious historic areas is out of the question," Alemanno said shortly after a World Cup organiser said the ancient chariot racetrack would be an unmatched venue for a World Cup City Event. "There's no better place in the world to host the City Event. I believe in this project," said Guenther Hujara, the chief race director for the World Cup and technical delegate to the Italian government. Hujara was in Rome Thursday surveying the Circus Maximus, which today is a grassy public park. Alemanno, himself a keen mountaineer and skier, voiced his "utmost willingness" to help the Italian winter-sports federation FISI find an alternative, "more suitable" venue.
