Police investigating 41 for false retirement claims

(ANSA) - Tropea, October 18 - Finance police in the southern Italian town of Tropea are investigating 41 people for claiming illegal retirement benefits totalling 500,000 euros. The claimants all obtained residency in Italy, but live abroad in Argentina, the United States and Uruguay, police said. Investigators believe that the pensioners of Italian origin filed for residency in Italy to claim state benefits, despite not living in the country. Those being probed risk charges of aggravated fraud and damage to the state.
