Italian police arrest 52 in country-wide cocaine sting

(ANSA) - Rome, October 18 - Italian police arrested 52 people in a country-wide sting against an alleged mafia-organized cocaine ring on Thursday. Anti-mafia investigators said they found evidence of use of commercial maritime routes to import drugs from Colombia and Equador, for delivery to Europe via the ports of Hamburg and Antwerp. Investigators found the cartel behind the international drug operation consisted of Milanese gangs belonging to the Calabrian-born 'Ndrangheta syndicate who collaborated with members of Sicily's Cosa Nostra in Palermo and Gela. "A Milan-based cartel of various 'Ndrangheta gangs was formed for cocaine destined for Belgium, Germany, Holland and Austria, as well as Italy," read a note from the police. The Milan-based criminal investigation was prompted by the murder of a drug-trafficker a few years ago.
