Firefighters protest pension reforms at interior ministry

(ANSA) - Rome, October 17 - Hundreds of firefighters waved diapers and catheters as they protested pension reforms outside the interior ministry Wednesday. Firefighters suggest the job is for younger, fit people, saying no one wants rescue personnel working to the age of 66 years. "(Who) wants to work on rescue vehicles to 62, 63, and some even 66 years," they said, adding other reforms affecting emergency services were "a short-sighted policy and criminal". Included in pension reforms passed by the Italian government are an increase in the retirement age to 66 for men, from 65; and to 62 from 60 for women.
