F1: Massa expresses joy at extension of Ferrari contract

(ANSA) - Bologna, October 16 - Felipe Massa didn't hide his joy at seeing his contract with Ferrari renewed for the 2013 season. "I am extremely happy about this agreement," the Brazilian Formula One driver said. The announcement was originally planned for next week, but Ferrari and Massa decided there was no use in waiting. Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo, fresh off a plane from Korea, saw Massa in Ferrari's headquarters in Maranello this morning. In an affectionate meeting, Montezemolo made his compliments to Massa for his excellent performance recently, especially in the Far East, the company reported. Massa may be Brazilian, but Ferrari regards the contract as an affirmation of home grown talent. The 31 year-old has driven for Ferrari since 2006, and is now one of the longest-standing veterans of the current Ferrari F1 team. "Ferrari is my sports family," Massa said on the Ferrari website. "I have always raced on motors built in Maranello. I can't see myself at the wheel of a car powered by any other engines! I want to thank above all President Montezemolo and (director) Stefano Domenicali, who had faith in me and have always supported me, even in difficult moments. Both the team and all the fans can be certain that I will do everything I possibly can to help (Ferrari) reach the goals it sets each year". The contract extension means the Italian F1 team will keep their current line-up of Massa and Spaniard Fernando Alonso at least until the end of 2013.
