Italian escaped kidnap attempt in Niger

(ANSA) - Rome, October 16 - An Italian anthropologist escaped a kidnapping attempt in south-east Niger Sunday, the honorary consul in the capital Niamey told ANSA Tuesday. The official, Paolo Giglio, said the anthropologist, Francesco Sincich, was coming to Niamey by bus. Sincich had worked for Doctors Without Borders for some time, Giglio said. The kidnappings of foreign workers in Niger has focused international attention on the Sahel, a vast desert region where commercial interests intersect with banditry and terrorism.
