Suspects named in Politkovskaia assassination probe

(ANSA) - Moscow, October 16 - Five people have been indicted for the murder of Russian opposition journalist and human rights activist Anna Politkovskaia, Russian investigators said on Tuesday. The suspects are Chechen brothers Rustam, Ibragim and Dzhabrail Makhmudov, their uncle Lom-Ali Gaitukayev and a former Moscow police chief, Serghiei Khadzhikurbanov. Three of the suspects have already appeared before the courts in connection with the murder but were acquitted due to lack of evidence. The Russian Supreme Court subsequently overturned the acquittal and ordered new investigations. On Tuesday investigators announced the close of the preliminary probe but said that investigations into the person or group behind the attack were still underway. Politkovskaia was gunned down outside her home in the Russian capital on October 7, 2006, in circumstances that remain unclear. The journalist worked for the liberal newspaper Novaja Gazeta and had made a name for herself for her reports denouncing human rights abuses by the Russian authorities in Russia and Chechnya and her opposition of Russian president Vladimir Putin.
