(ANSA) – Rome, October 12 – Illegal immigrants working in Italy without regular contracts and their employers have until October 15 to request their position be regularized by local authorities. A decree that was activated September 15 allows employers to legally hire foreigners working continuously since at least December 31, 2011 by filing an application and paying 1,000 euros each plus six months worth of salaries, welfare and taxes. After the deadline, employers of non-European Union nationals present in Italy without a visa face heavy new sanctions introduced by a July law. Requests to date received by the Italian Ministry of the Interior totalled 93,181. Most of the applications involve domestic workers and home care providers.
