Police bust Salerno prostitution ring

(ANSA) - Salerno, October 12 - Salerno police on Friday arrested two people on suspicion of involvement in a local prostitution ring bringing young women from Eastern Europe to Italy. Pasquale Izzo, a 46-year-old man from Scafati in the province of Salerno and 35-year-old Lilia Fatculin from Moldova were taken into custody following investigations that began at the start of this year. The presumed ring leader, 36-year-old Ruzdhi Bermeta from Albania and a 39-year-old Bulgarian named Manoil Manailov instead eluded capture and are thought to now be in their respective countries. The gang allegedly recruited the women from Eastern Europe and then used violence and threats to force them into prostitution at assigned locations along the stretch of coast running from Salerno to Eboli in southern Italy. The women were also made to pay 200 euros a week to the organisation for their assigned place.
