Students and teachers demonstrate in 90 cities

(ANSA) - Rome, October 12 - Italian students are demonstrating Friday in 90 cities throughout the country to protest against "the sale of public schools and destruction of universities", a statement by the student activists' network Conoscenza said. "We are protesting to show our total opposition to the proposed law 953 which would eliminate student representatives in school boards and enable private companies to enter our schools as happened after the 2010 approval of the Gelmini law", said Roberto Campanelli, national coordinator of the Unione Studenti (Students' Union). Another measure opposed by students is the "tax increase for students who have not completed their university studies in the designated time and the reduction of scholarships, dramatic measures which will prohibit many from attending university," Luca Spadon, the national spokesperson of the activist organization Link Coordinamento Universitario' said. Demonstrations are scheduled all day in Italy's main squares "to highlight the dramatic situation suffered by students who have been hit by the crisis in an unprecedented way and who want to change schools and universities in a democratic process", said a statement by the students' union.
