Comedian suggested sexual impropriety in 2008 tirade

Guzzanti ordered to pay 40,000 for defaming former minister

(ANSA) - Rome, October 10 - An Italian court has ordered comedian and actress Sabina Guzzanti to pay 40,000 euros in damages for defaming a former cabinet minister. Guzzanti acknowledged her comments caused offence to former equal opportunities minister Mara Carfagna, but said she was only being sarcastic in her 2008 parody. In a political tirade in Rome's Piazza Navona, Guzzanti gave a modern twist to an old song about sexual practices by hinting at improprieties in Carfagna's role in the cabinet of former premier Silvio Berlusconi. Guzzanti said she hoped Carfagna would give the libel payment to charity. Carfagna, who was embarrassed by the incident, declined to comment, saying only that "the judgement speaks for itself".
