Enel workers climb smoke stack in protest

(ANSA) - Laino Borgo, October 4 - Four workers of Italian energy giant Enel on Thursday climbed a smoke stack to protest employment uncertainty in Laino Borgo, in the southern region of Calabria. The four workers were demanding guarantees about their future at the Mercure thermoelectric biomass plant, which reportedly has not yet been made operational since it was built in 1964. The demonstration was taking place ahead of a planned October 10 meeting between local and regional authorities and representatives of Enel, Italy's largest utility provider. "We are concerned the meeting will yet again be pushed forward, leading to further delays on decisions being made about the future of the 100 employees," the workers said.
