Soccer: Milan are 'coming back' after Zenit win

(ANSA) - Milan, October 4 - AC Milan are confident they are putting their poor early-season form behind them after beating Zenit St. Petersburg 3-2 in the Champions League. The seven-time European champions, who beat Cagliari 2-0 in Serie A last week to notch their first home win of the season, defeated the Russian champions on Wednesday thanks to strikes by Urby Emanuelson and in-form 19-year-old Stephan El Shaarawy and a Tomas Hubocan own goal. "We are coming back," said Milan Chief Executive Adriano Galliani, who added that "this will be the year of El Shaarawy". Coach Massimiliano Allegri, who has been in danger of losing his job according to press reports, was hopeful the win could be a turning point. "This is a new team that has had some problems," he said. "We needed a victory and we managed to achieve it". Milan sold their two best players, Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Brazil defender Thiago Silva, to Paris Saint-Germain in the close season. They also bid farewell to several long-serving veterans, including centre back Alessandro Nesta and midfielders Clarence Seedorf and Gennaro Gattuso. Milan are 11th in Serie A with seven points from six games, nine points behind front-runners Juventus and Napoli. After drawing their opening European game 0-0 at home with Anderlecht, Allegri's men are second in Champions League Group C with four points, two points behind leaders Malaga.
