Vatican denies butler mistreated

(see related story on site). (ANSA) - Vatican City, October 3 - The Vatican on Wednesday denied claims from Pope Benedict XVI's ex-butler Paolo Gabriele that he was mistreated in custody. Vatican custody chief Luca Cintia told the butler's trial that he had been treated with "kid gloves" and had "thanked us more than once for his treatment". Gabriele, who is set to be sentenced Saturday in the so-called Vatileaks case, claimed Tuesday his cell was too small to stretch his arms and the light was never switched off during his first 20 days of detention, before he was moved to a larger cell.
