Italian president contesting State-Mafia probe tactics

Napolitano, Palermo magistrates dispute to he heard Dec. 4

(ANSA) - Rome, October 1 - A dispute between Palermo magistrates and President Giorgio Napolitano will be heard publicly on December 4, Italy's Constitutional Court announced Monday. Napolitano turned to the Constitutional Court in July to intervene in Palermo prosectors' handling of wiretaps recorded during a probe into alleged State-Mafia negotiations in the early 1990s. The Italian president alleges that magistrates overstepped their powers by wiretapping the conversations of one of his legal advisors during their investigations and failing to destroy them afterwards, as the Constitution mandates.
