Italy coming up short on foreign aid, Terzi says

(ANSA) - Rome, October 1 - Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi on Monday said Italy needed to make up for a drop in its foreign-aid budget in order to remain a major player on global issues. "We must decisively overcome this aid gap if we want to maintain our proper weight on the international playing field and continue to speak with authority at the global level," said Terzi at the Italian Forum on International Cooperation in Milan. According to the foreign ministry, its aid budget at the start of the year was only 0.19% of GDP, or 200 million euros less than in 2007 - an 80% reduction.
