Italy court forces company to rehire fired maternity woman

(ANSA) – Chieti, September 27 - An Italian court has forced a company based in the central region of Abruzzo to rehire a woman who was fired in 2006 shortly after returning from maternity leave. The judge in the September 24 sentence recognised the existence of discrimination on the part of the company, and ruled it must not only rehire the former employee but also pay her retrospectively all the monthly paychecks not received since being fired. In addition, the company was asked to pay all the legal costs incurred by both the worker and the trade union that assisted her in the legal action.
