Screen beauty plays against type as 'devastated' woman

Bellucci premieres with Iran film Rhino Season

(ANSA) - San Sebastian, September 27 - Italian actress Monica Bellucci premiered Thursday at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain with Bahman Ghobadi's Iranian production Rhino Season, where the screen beauty is portrayed for the first time as a devastated woman. The red carpet presentation for the feature film was scrapped due to protests related to cuts in government funds in the region. Rhino Season is the tale of a tragic love story set between Tehran prior to the 1979 Islamic revolution and Istanbul today. The film is based on the Kurdish poet Sadegh Kamangar, who was arrested and sentenced to 30 years in jail. Once incarcerated, his first task is that of looking for his wife Mina. "For the first time, I felt very distant from my culture, because it wasn't a European or an American film," said Bellucci. "I took part in it because I felt curiosity towards Iranian culture and towards new directors such as (Abbas) Kiarostami. "For them, filmmaking is a form of combat. "For an Iranian actress, it would have been impossible to do this film and then to go back home".
